This site is dedicated to my Cornish ancestors who labored in the mines, invented some of the worlds greatest machines, and changed the world for the better wherever they emigrated. Trevithicks have emigrated to Australia, Canada, Italy, Mexico, New Zealand, South Africa, and the United States of America. Tell me where else they have gone.
This site is specific to the surname Trevithick (tre-vi´-thick), but includes all families and individuals for whom I can confirm a relationship.

I have always wondered at the name Trevithick, and over the years have found various explanations of the name. The most recent, and I think most authoritative comes from 'A Handbook of Cornish Surnames' and has the following to say.
Along with Trevithick the name Trevethick also exists, but it's probably the same name. In the Cornish language it means Homestead of Budic. There are two words in the name Trevithick. The first is Tre, which means 'homestead and is a very common Cornish prefix, as in Trethowan, Trevail, Trevan, Trevarthen, Tremaine, Tremethick, Trerise, Tresize, Trestrail, Trethwey, etc. The second word is Budic, but the initial consonant 'B' is mutated to a 'V'. Mutation of initial consonants under specific circumstances is common to all six of the Celtic languages.

My grandfather, Richard Clinton Trevithick, knew how our family was related to Cornwall's most famous man, Richard Trevithick, "The Cornish Giant". When he passed away in 1976, this knowledge passed with him. No one in my family remembers, and I have not been able to make the connection. Any help with this endeavor would be greatly appreciated.
